Earth Month Series: Beyond the Three 3 R’s

Earth Month Series: Beyond the Three 3 R’s

April is our FAVORITE around here because spring is springing, the redbud trees are getting ready to bloom, and … Earth Day!

In truth, we believe every day is earth day, which is why we’re taking the opportunity this month to dive into the 5 R’s for Earth Month: Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose, and Recycle. In that order, please.

You’ve probably heard of the three 3 R’s: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. They certainly were drilled into my head in elementary school! When asked, many people recite them as examples of how to live an  “environmentally friendly” life.

But when massive environmental events affect our lives and the lives of people we know and love, such as wildfires caused by climate change related droughts, heat waves, super storms, cancers caused by pollution and more, it’s hard to reconcile how things as simple as the Three R’s -- and whether we choose to use plastic or paper straws -- really make a difference.

Fortunately, there’s a great podcast that goes into depth on so many big issues like these and leaves you feeling inspired with action you can take. Check it out at How to Save a Planet. One of the most useful episodes I’ve found engages the question Does anything I do on an individual level actually make a difference? Find it here: Is My Carbon Footprint BS?

Additionally, this month, we’ll be exploring the five “R’s” in a blog series. Our aim is to see how, as adventurers in sustainability, we can have a positive impact in our world with the choices we can make. Spoiler alert? The best way to maximize your positive impact is to build (or join in) community around what you are already doing.

Each post will include examples of how to adventure sustainably, plus a challenge that you can incorporate into your everyday adventure rhythms.

We’re all on a journey of learning how to live more sustainably, and far more than we realize, we are in this together.

Thanks for being part of the Redbudsuds adventure community. If you find this inspiring, helpful or thought provoking, please share with your friends and family.

We hope you enjoy the series!
